AAS Fellow elected International Member of the National Academy of Sciences, USA
Baldwyn Torto is Principal Scientist and Head of the Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Unit, International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, Nairobi, Kenya, and Extraordinary Professor, Department of Zoology and Entomology, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Previously, he worked as a scientist at the USDA/ARS-Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary and Entomology, USA. He is a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America, African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and an International Member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), USA. He serves on the Jury of Falling Walls Breakthroughs, (Life Sciences), Berlin, and Selection Committee, UNESCO-Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World-Elsevier Foundation Awards. Previously he served as the President, Board of Trustees, JRS Biodiversity Foundation, USA.
Baldwyn has authored 280 articles including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and patents. Jointly with collaborators he has attracted more than US$20 million in research grants. He has mentored 80 international trainees including MSc, PhD and Postdoctorals, and scores of interns from 15 African countries, whose studies have been published in journals such as Nature Sustainability, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Current Biology, Science of the Total Environment, Proceedings of the Royal Society, among others.
He is recipient of several international awards: 2020 icipe@50 Achievement Award; 2020 Entomological Society of America Nan-Yao Su Award for Innovation and Creativity in Entomology; 2019 Louis Malassis International Prize for Food and Agriculture for Outstanding Career in Agricultural Development, Agropolis Foundation, France, 2018 Journal Article of the Year and Lecture Award, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (AGRO-Division, American Chemical Society), and a Rothamsted International Fellow in 2000.
He serves on the Editorial Boards of Annual Review of Entomology, Current Opinion in Insect Science, Journal of Chemical Ecology, Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences (retired), Pest Management Science (retired), and Chief Specialty Editor - Vector Biology, Frontiers in Tropical Diseases. He obtained his PhD from the University of Ghana, and Postdoctoral at the University of Maine, Orono, USA.
